Frequently asked questions

The Seasonal Module is version 1.7. Can I install it on top of version 4.0?

Background

The Visual Liturgy Seasonal Module was released in November 1998. Version 2.0, version 3.0 and version 4.0 have been released subsequently but, in all cases, the material from the Seasonal Module was not included. This was due to a decision by the Liturgical Commission to distinguish between the "commended" material that is in the Seasonal Module and the "authorized" material from The Alternative Service Book 1980 and then Common Worship.

For Visual Liturgy users, of course, it means that you may well need to install the latest version and then install 1.7 (the Seasonal Module) on top of it in order to get all of the material available.

Is this a problem for version 2.0 or 3.0?

If you are upgrading from 1.7 to version 2.0 or version 3.0, then the Seasonal material will be preserved and the software will upgrade in the usual way.

If you are doing a fresh installation of version 2.0 or version 3.0 and subsequently add the Seasonal material, the setup routine may advise you that version 1.7 is being installed. You can safely ignore this message, as it won't overwrite your more up-to-date version.

You may also see a message warning that lectionary information will not be imported. This can also be safely ignored since the (small amount of) lectionary information in the Seasonal services is also included in later versions.

If you don't get either of these messages, don't worry. Later versions of the Seasonal Module were updated to remove these warnings. Either way, your Seasonal Module should install safely on top of your existing copy of Visual Liturgy.

Is this a problem for version 4.0?

If you are upgrading from a previous version of Visual Liturgy which already includes the Seasonal material, the Import Module process can be used safely to bring the Seasonal material into version 4.0.

If you are doing a fresh installation of version 4.0 and subsequently try to add the Seasonal material, the setup routine will not work. The Seasonal module is not directly compatible with version 4.0 if installed on a machine that does not have version 3.0 or earlier installed.

As a result, the module is being withdrawn from sale in its current format to prevent a new user purchasing a full version of Visual Liturgy 4.0 for Common Worship and the Seasonal module and trying to install them both together. A decision from Church House Publishing is expected in due course as to whether the Seasonal module will be updated and re-released for version 4.0 or whether it will be discontinued ahead of Common Worship: Times and Seasons which is due to be published in the next eighteen months.
